Tertiary Treatment

Tertiary treatment refers to the advanced wastewater process that removes contaminates that could not be eliminated during the secondary treament process.  Before water can be put into sensitive ecosystems such as estuaries, low-flow rivers, and coral reefs, the water must be treated and disinfected chemically or physically. Contaminates such as nitrogen, phosphorous, heavy metals, and dissolved solids are typically removed during tertiary treatment.
