Title: Single Moyno Muncher Replaces Existing Grinders in Rhode Island

100 2188A single Moyno TR Muncher has been selected to do the work previously done by three grinder units which were struggling to deliver the required performance and maintenance levels at Rhode Island’s largest wastewater treatment facility.

The single TR Muncher installed in the Fields Point Wastewater Treatment Facility incorporates Moyno’s unique EZstrip design, which allows the unit to be maintained in place, without the need to remove it from the process. It is already delivering many benefits, including increased efficiency, simpler operating procedures and reduced maintenance requirements. “It has certainly simplified the operations at the plant,” says Bob Mack, of New England Environmental Equipment, who installed the Muncher. “Having only one grinder and being able to repair it in-house, rather than shipping it offsite, reduces the maintenance time and helps keep the plant up and running.”

The Fields Point Wastewater Treatment Facility processes up to 150 million gallons of wastewater per day in dry weather, and more during rainy periods, so any equipment installed there must offer outstanding levels of reliability and performance. Designed specifically for the efficient maceration of abrasive sludges, the Moyno Muncher is a twin shaft, slow speed, high torque grinder that macerates the solids within a flow, and has been used successfully in a wide variety of installation types over the past 25 years.

The twin shafts feature a series of interleaving cutters and spacers which create a ‘positive displacement’ grinding action, with the differential cutter speeds pulling apart any fibrous material, cropping and shearing plastic items into small pieces and crushing any brittle material. A cantilever shaft design removes the need for bottom bearings and seals and so significantly reduces the number of wearing components, while the layback design of the cutter shafts allows them to be removed without disturbing the pipeline.

A patented built-in trash trap set below the cutter stacks catches any rejected material and prevents damage to the cutters, while clean-out ports allow the rejected object to be removed easily. Ideal for pipeline or channel installations, the Muncher can be used for a wide variety of pump protection and other industrial duties. Optional high-flow side rails are available to help increase performance in higher capacity applications such as Field Point.

Title: Moyno Munchers Make Their Mark In Massachusetts

MassachusettsA pair of Moyno Series A Munchers have helped reduce maintenance intervals and improve capacity at a major waste water treatment plant in Massachusetts. The special construction of the Moyno units - and their ability to handle up to 11 million gallons per day (MGD) - has also helped reduce the risk of overflows during storm periods.

Operated by the Lynn Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Humphrey Street facility in Swampscott, MA, had previously been using a single large grinder unit to process wastewater. However the unit’s 50” tall cutter stack and single 10” diameter drum were struggling to cope with the excessively high flows experienced during intense rain storms, and the cost of replacing it with a similar alternative was prohibitive.

Given their sizeable handling capacity, the two Moyno CA215 units were selected as a replacement solution. The Swampscott station receives roughly 2 MGD of inflow, but the Moyno units can accommodate 5.5MGD each, giving a combined total of 11 MGD. Combined with an initial filter installed upstream to limit any extreme flow, this virtually eliminates any risk of overflow, even during major storms. The Moyno units have also been built on 6-foot extended shafts, and fitted with extra-high sides to mitigate the risk of the flow going over the top of the inlet channel.

Both Moyno units are located in the channel, and during normal flow levels they are used alternately, on a monthly basis. This greatly extends the intervals between repairs, and always allows one unit to be in operation while the other is being maintained.“The Moyno units have made a tremendous difference to our Humphrey Street operation,” says Al Waitt, project manager, Lynn Wastewater Treatment Facility. “Our levels can rise dramatically during a storm, and it’s reassuring to know that the facility can now handle that sort of event without any concern about overflows.”

The Moyno Series A twin-shaft, slow speed, high-torque grinders offer an ideal solution to the need to macerate sludges and solids within a flow. Their twin shafts have a series of interleaved cutters and spacers which create a powerful ‘positive displacement’ grinding action. Once solids are trapped in the slowly revolving cutters, the differential speed of the cutter stacks pulls apart fibrous material, crops and shears plastic and crushes brittle materials, while the low cutter tip speeds reduce wear rates by minimising any impact loading.

100 2259The product of over 25 years’ experience, the Munchers are ideal for high volume grinding applications, and offer rugged and reliable protection for pumps and other downstream. process equipment . The Munchers are supplied with a programmable logic controller (PLC) to protect the machine against damage and overloads. An optional Profibus data capture system is available to record operational information.
